In the recent past, there has been growing concern about whether AI will essentially get rid of software developers. Even executives from big Tech companies are weighing in to give their perspective on where this is all going. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO was quoted as saying that with AI, “everyone is a programmer…just by speaking to the computer, and the desired function will come forthâ. Jensen was boldly suggesting that “coding might be dead”.Github’s Thomas Dohmke said for software developers, it’s “either you adopt AI or get out of this career.”
After a lot of discourse, however, there is a consensus that AI will not be wiping out the role/profession entirely. On the contrary, however, it’s going to shift the tasks where software developers will be turned into code editors rather than code writers. They will focus more of their energy on assessing and editing code rather than developing it themselves.
There is a disconnect, however, since Most of the senior executives are keen on pushing the limits of AI because they view it as a great Avenue of increasing productivity while reducing cost and keeping the shareholders happy. On the other hand, junior developers are greatly concerned about what the future of the industry holds for them. To be fair, it’s not an unsubstantiated concern. We are already seeing that most entry-level roles that these juniors could use as a steppingstone are now being replaced by AI. According to (state the study data). The only way for upcoming developers is to incorporate AI in software development as a skill. Just like so many other disciplines, AI will eventually be used as a tool to enhance productivity rather than a replacement for human labor.
