What you need to know about Huawei’s new Tri-Fold Mate XT.

It’s summer’s end and you know it’s mobile tech launching season. Just days after Apple launched its anticipated iPhone 16 series, Chinese-owned Huawei launched the first dual-hinged Triple screen foldable phone in a move seen as a way to steal the spotlight from Apple. The surprise launch of Mate XT hit the market like a storm. As expected, it elicited lots of reaction especially because the Apple iPhone 16 series launch failed to live up to the expectations after they failed to include the much-anticipated Apple AI.

The Mate XT comes in 2 colors i.e. red and dark black

The XT Mate comes in 2 colors. Red and dark black

with a decent 6.4-inch OLED display when folded and 10.2 inches when fully unfolded. In short, it can be used in 3 modes. The regular phone mode, The square folded mode, and the full tablet experience mode.

Measurement

Despite having 3 screen displays the new Mate XT is quite sleek and light. it has a measurement of 3.6 mm while weighing 298g making it one of the

thinnest smartphones in the market.

Battery

The device comes with a 5600mAh battery and supports 66W of wired charging and runs on in-house Harmony OS.

Camera

The XT has a triple camera display consisting of 3 lenses. The main and largest camera is a 50-megapixel that supports PDAF (Photo Detection Autofocus), a 12-megapixel ultrawide, and a 12-megapixel periscope.

Pricing

It’s difficult to argue whether the price is worth the hype, at least in this initial stage. If you need to test out this new engineering design, you should be ready to part with approximately a whopping $2800.Yes, it’s more expensive than a brand-new 16-inch MacBook.

One of the straightforward downsides however is that the Mate XT doesn’t incorporate AI. A territory that everyone else in the industry is looking to do maximum exploitation.

This could have been a game changer especially now that Apple has delayed the launch of its much-anticipated Apple AI which was expected to come with the new iPhone 16 series, but iPhone lovers will have to wait till later in the year to enjoy the experience. This came as a big disappointment causing Apple shares to plummet by 1.7% the day after its launch.

All said and done, this is an interesting move to see as it may prove tobe the next mobile technology frontier especially when it comes to hardware engineering whereby you can accommodate different feels using a single device. It remains to be seen how much of an impact this design will have and whether other brands will hop on the bandwagon signaling the full return of the “folding technology”.
