The AI Gold Rush goes Public. Why 2026 is the year AI companies Hit Wall Street.
And what it means for the AI Industry.
Since AI went mainstream a few years ago, it has rapidly evolved. The first week of June 2026 marked another turning point: two major AI players filed for IPOs just 7 days apart. Anthropic AI, creator of Claude, filed on June 1st, and ChatGPT’s OpenAI filed on June 8th. Wall Street has awaited this moment, and now it’s here.
Why Now
No single reason explains this timing; several factors are at play. First is money: it’s a strategic move to spur company growth. Despite uncertainties, investor enthusiasm for AI has grown over the past year.
Another reason is that private investors and venture capitalists have been pumping insane amounts of money into crowdfunding for these companies, but they are growing fast, making it unsustainable to fund them privately anymore. In its most recent valuation, OpenAI was valued at $852B with annual revenue of around $20B.On the other hand, Anthropic is valued at $965B.
These two companies are product rivals, so you would assume that none of them would want to give up the edge by letting the other establish itself as the definitive public-market AI story. Despite the high revenues, operational costs for AI have been the single biggest hurdle in the industry. For example, it’s estimated that OpenAI loses $1.22 for every $ it earns. On the other hand, Anthropic is expected to be posting it
s first ever profit from operating costs during the next quarter. This could be very significant as it will boost public confidence going into this.
What it means for the industry
It is the time of reckoning for the industry. Up to this point, AI has been almost exclusively valued by the private sector. Which is basically a small group of investors and venture capitalists who have been burning cash. Public valuation is so much more cutthroat and unforgiving. If the IPOs go well, it will be a validation of billions of dollars that have been put into this industry. If things don’t go well, this will put the whole sector at risk of being priced down. No matter what the outcome, this is clearly a new chapter that will shape the industry as we expect other AI companies to join the party. Perplexity has already signaled that it’s planning to go public next year, regardless of the outcome. It’s now officially determined that in the coming quarters we shall be able to clearly establish the real worth of Artificial Intelligence.
